Accomplishments

The Historic Sherbrooke Village Development Society (HSVDS) is a registered joint stock company which seeks to enhance and promote the cultural, historical and educational mandate of Historic Sherbrooke Village.

Our most recent accomplishment was the acquisition of over 400 acres of land that will be used for environmental learning programs, ecotourism and resources.

Also acquired recently was a 1927 Ford Model T which will be used in future plans for programming, marketing and promotions of Sherbrooke Village Restoration. The vehicle is currently under restoration.

In the past funds were raised through activities such as card games, canteen and ice cream sales at public events, and through the support of corporate and private donors, the Development Society has been able to assist Sherbrooke Village and its operations in the following ways:

A new and improved entranceway was provided in 2003 for easier access to Sherbrooke Village.  The project, with a cost of approximately $30,000, was fully financed through ongoing fund-raising efforts by the Development Society.

The Development Society has provided a PA system which the Village has been able to use for the music programs it carries out as well as a variety of public events.

Audio visual equipment and a computer have been provided to produce and present an orientation and introductory DVD for the Village.

The HSVDS purchased wall mounted change tables for all public washrooms on the Sherbrooke Village site.

Funding has been accessed for employment grants, including summer students, a fund-raising co-ordinator, fence builders, curatorial assistants and a promotional assistant.

The “ExxonMobil Hands On Heritage Awards” provided $4,000 per year for a three year period, totaling $12,000, to assist selected schools with the costs of a trip to Sherbrooke to participate in the Hands On History program.

The “Beauti-Tone Paints The Town” campaign had the company partner with Highland Home Hardware to match paint purchases dollar for dollar up to $2,000 per year for a five year period, totaling a value of $10,000.

The “Good Fences, Good Neighbours” campaign made great strides in the repair of the fences at Sherbrooke Village.  The fences, constructed in 1982, had deteriorated over time to the point where most needed replacement.  Over a mile and a half of fencing was replaced.

The “Keep the Home Fires Burning” campaign - Twenty-six buildings in the Village required repairs to chimneys. Some of the repairs were required for fire safety, and in cases where brick is actually falling, the repairs are necessary for public safety. Due to the size of the project, the maintenance budget was not able to cover the repairs. Some craft buildings, such as the jail and the blacksmith shop, needed fires in order to perform their duties. The HSVDS provided support through donations of brick from Shaw Group and monetary donations from individuals for the repairs and replacements for the chimneys. These repairs included rebuilding portions of chimneys, as well as installing stainless steel liners and thimbles where necessary.

The "Doctors' House Calls" campaign - Renova Cottage (the Doctors’ House in common usage) is considered to be one of the “showcase” homes as befits the status of the Doctor in a thriving community such as Sherbrooke at the beginning of the last century. Unfortunately, the house, furnishings and decorative trappings were showing serious signs of deterioration brought about by heating problems. Thanks to the great financial support received from the Nova Scotia medical community, we had been able to refurbish Renova Cottage to its former grandeur.

Washers and a dryer were provided for the Wardrobe Department, Hands On History Department and Brigley House.

The HSVDS funded the design and print of brochures for the Hands On History program and Woodworking shop.

The HSVDS has provided bursary money towards a number of Sherbrooke Village employees for further education in their given fields.

The HSVDS has purchased dishes and cutlery with which to cater meals and special events along with providing much needed kitchen upgrades at the Exhibit Centre and purchase and installation of new lighting for the entire building, approximately 100 fixtures.

In 2013 the HSVDS purchased a commercial grade mower for grounds maintenance a team of horses and new wagon with which to continue the much enjoyed wagon rides given throughout the Village all year round. Also purchased a pair of horses and wagon for the Farm Program.

In 2014 the HSVDS purchased a pair of Canadian horses and passenger wagon to be used to take visitors around the site.

In 2014 the HSVDS purchased a new sound system to be used on site for concerts and events.

In 2014 the HSVDS with help from funds raised through one of the sub committees-Sherbrooke Show & Shine, purchased a 2012 Dodge ½ ton truck for use in promotions, supply pick up and maintenance and a utility trailer for use in hauling promotional materials, supplies and maintenance equipment.

In 2015 the HSVDS received a substantial donation from a founding family member & his wife with which they purchased one of the last two privately owned homes in the Village and subsequently turned it over the Province for Village use.

Society members are committed to working toward the goals and requirements of Sherbrooke Village.

Programs/Events Hosted by the HSVDS and Subcommittees: Sherbrooke Show & Shine and Sherbrooke Village Rally That Gives.

The Historic Sherbrooke Village Development Society (HSVDS) enhances programs at Sherbrooke Village by hosting musical events including the “Courthouse Concert Series”, concerts are held weekly on Thursday evenings in July and August and Friday evenings in September, offering music from a variety of genres and featuring predominantly Nova Scotia artists. The “Sherbrooke Village Road to Stanfest Songwriters’ Camp” is a weeklong learning camp where songwriters can improve their abilities in the art, technique & craft of song writing. Instructors are seasoned, accomplished professionals.

The society has been hosting an annual Photography Camp facilitated by instructor Wally Hayes. This is a four day photography workshop in Sherbrooke Village.  The Village, the beautiful St. Mary’s River and the surrounding area offer a wealth of material for photography. There is on-site photography throughout the Village with opportunities for interior shots. Each evening the class will get together for a short critique of photos taken that day and socializing. Thursday afternoon there will be a showing of photography taken throughout the week long camp at the Exhibit Centre.

One of the largest events hosted by the HSVDS is the “Sherbrooke Show & Shine”, a gathering of classic and antique vehicles. The event has been taking place for 19 years, is self-sustainable, brings in approximately 3,000 spectators and features a road rally, music, dance at the Lions Hall, door prizes and raffle.

The HSVDS also hosts a motorcycle rally in aid of the Cancer Society’s Lodge That Gives which brings in about 100 bikers and raises the profile of the HSVDS and Sherbrooke Village as responsible community leaders. This event has donated close over $40,000 to the Lodge That Gives and in 2014 began splitting the donation evenly between Holy Redeemer Convent, Cathy’s Place Cancer Resource Centre at St. Martha’s Hospital and The Lodge That Gives.
